Active Stretch Begins Friday Night
Summary
An active stretch of stormy weather begins on Friday night with three to four progressively stronger storms. The storms starting at the end of next week continuing into the following week bring the potential for substantial snow accumulations.
Short Term Forecast
Several storms are lined up for the next ten days, each one stronger than the last. We’ll start with a period of snow showers, then a round of light to moderate snow, and finally a significant storm with another on its heels.
Since I’ve been talking about these first two minor events for several days now, you can refer to the posts over the last few days for the details.
As I’ve been saying in those posts, I’m more excited by the potentially stronger storms starting later next week. The first question with these storms is whether the northern or southern Alps will be the focus.
Over the last few days, the models have trended towards a more southerly track, similar to the last major storm. As the storm moves southeast, however, winds transition to a more northwesterly flow which would bring solid totals to the northern Alps in addition to the bullseye of the southern Alps. This storm has the potential to deliver powder days to most of the Alps and the Pyrenees. I love the storms that share the wealth.
As you can see from an early look at potential snow totals below, the Italian Alps look deep.
Although we’re now getting close to fantasy land forecasting, it’s worth mentioning that another strong storm may follow in the wake of the first. Early indications are that this storm could take a similar track to the previous storm, but it’s way too early to get specific. There’s good agreement among the ensembles of a second strong storm but it’s more than ten days away.
Ok, that's all for today.
Thanks for reading the Europe Daily Snow!

NEW: Purple Forecast Signals Mixed Precipitation
You might have noticed a new color in our snow forecast summary and 10-day snow forecast graphs. OpenSnow previously only had blue to show snowfall under 6 inches and orange to indicate snowfall over 6 inches.
We recently added purple to signal the chance for mixed precipitation (snow/rain) in the forecast.
