You're Blocked!

Summary

A large-scale stationary blocking pattern has kept most of the region dry for the last week and will continue to do so through at least mid-November. After a record-setting September snowstorm and a few additional rounds of snow in late September and early October, the early taste of Winter has left. I wish I had better news but at the moment there's no sign of a pattern change.

Short Term Forecast

A stubborn ridge of high pressure has been parked in western Europe for the last week and has no plans of leaving any time soon. This feature blocks storms from moving into western Europe and the Alps and Pyrenees. The jet stream is deflected north of the Alps and Pyrenees, as you can see below, sending storms toward Scandinavia.

The long-range ensemble models show this pattern, with a ridge in western Europe, persisting through mid-month. Below is the average upper-level pattern from 11/1-11/8 and 11/8 - 11/15.

It will be hard to get any snow storms with this pattern over the next two weeks.

Extended Forecast

It's hard to get much useful data in models beyond two weeks, but even those don't show any obvious signs of a pattern change. Luckily, there's more room for that to change.

Thanks for reading the Europe Daily Snow!
