Good Pow Days This Week
Summary
Over the last few days, many parts of the Alps have experienced great powder conditions. This latest storm dropped up to 1.5 m in the French Alps, covering a wide area of 25 - 7 5 cm. The last storm in this series will drop down into the Pyrenees this (Wednesday) evening and deliver another period of heavy snow.
Short Term Forecast
As the next upper-level low moves into the region, it will take a north-to-south track through France and Spain, bringing heavy snow to the Pyrenees. After it has crossed the Pyrenees, it will begin to become cut off from flow, and the it will stall.
Before I get into the snow forecast, let's take a look at the modeled snow totals for the last three days, courtesy of the high-res WRF.
When the upper-level low stalls, it will bring winds from the southeast to northeast into the southwestern Alps. This resembles the retour d'est type storms and brings heavy snow to the north and east-facing respects of the southwestern Italian Alps. This heavy snow will be falling from Thursday through Friday morning, with showers lingering thereafter. Both the Pyrenees and should see 20 - 40 cm from this event.
Extended Forecast
We could see a break in the action next week, but it looks short-lived. The models don't agree on how the action continues, but they do, for the most part.
My next post will be on Friday.
Thanks for reading the Europe Daily Snow!
