Another Retour d'est
Summary
It's been a bit of a wild ride with the models this week, though that's not all that surprising when not one, not two, but three cut off lows are in the mix. The western Italian Alps will see some heavy snow Saturday though Sunday as the Retour d'est crosses the southern Alps. The Alps will then dry out for a week to ten days while the Pyrenees will see a few rounds of light rain and snow.
Short Term Forecast
The Retour d'est will bring a period of moderate to heavy snow in the western Italian Alps, in the typical southeast to northeast facing aspects. Favored locations will see 25 - 50 cm during this time, including the north and east facing areas in the Cuneo region.
Below is the latest snow forecast from the WRF model.
Snow levels will hover around 1000 m in during this storm and the heaviest snow is expected on Saturday night. Sunday should be a solid powder day especially in the Cuneo region.
Once this storm wraps up on Sunday, we enter another extended dry stretch. The Alps are expected to remain storm free for the next seven to ten days as a strong ridge develops over central Europe.
Extended Forecast
We could see some rain or snow showers in the Pyrenees next week but no major storms are expected until next weekend at the earliest. With the ridge drifting a bit eastward throughout the week, we should see storms moving into Western Europe next weekend. The models show some storms dipping south across France and Spain and tracking through the Mediterranean. This would bring more heavy snow to the southern Alps if he latest models are correct.
My next post will be on Saturday.
Thanks for reading the Europe Daily Snow!

Getting Started
- Tap the "Maps" tab.
- Tap the overlay button.
- Tap "Forecast Snowfall".
- Scrub the bottom slider.
What are the main use cases for the forecast snowfall maps?
Get an easy-to-use visualization of the snow forecast for your favorite locations, check the timing of upcoming storms to catch the deepest turns or to avoid snowy road conditions, and see which ski resorts are favored for the deepest snow totals.
Are there any limitations to the forecast snowfall maps?
The forecast snowfall maps count "mixed precipitation" as "snow" so the maps could show more snow in areas that are getting sleet or freezing rain, along with where the rain/snow line is difficult to forecast. Double-check any location by tapping the map for the forecast details.
