Snow Through Friday, and More This Weekend
Summary
Snow is falling across the northern and western Alps as the first of two weak storms moves across the region. The second storm will move in quickly and bring another round of snow from Thursday to Friday. This storm is now expected to split, keeping the action going in the eastern and the western side of the southern Alps through the weekend.
Short Term Forecast
Moderate to heavy snow has been falling in the northern and western Alps over the last day, and that will continue through Thursday morning. Snow from the next weak storm arrives shortly thereafter on Thursday morning, bringing some snow showers through Friday morning.
This upper-level low is now forecast to split, with one piece drifting southwest across the Alps, while the other moves off to the east.
This will bring another period of southerly/easterly winds into the southern Alps which will keep the snow going through the weekend. Now the eastern facing parts of the southwestern Alps will get in on the action with a setup similar to a Retour d'est, bringing easterly winds as the storm tracks east to west.
Snow will fall in the eastern side of the southern Alps from Friday morning through Sunday morning. In the western side of the southern Alps, the storm will bring snow from Saturday afternoon through Monday afternoon. Below is the latest snow forecast from the European model through Monday.
The western Italian Alps could end up being the big winner if the European model is correct, though the other models aren't so optimistic about the snowfall in this area. I think 10 - 20 cm is likely in this region, with at the potential for more given the ideal storm track.
Extended Forecast
There aren't many changes in the long-range forecast, with ridging still expected to develop later this weekend across central Europe. We could see some activity in the Pyrenees as early as the end of next week but the Alps should stay dry until early the following week, around the 10th.
My next post will be on Thursday.
Thanks for reading the Europe Daily Snow!

NEW: Forecast Snowfall Maps
Visualize the snow forecast in 2D or 3D for the next 6, 12, and 24 hours, along with total snowfall for the next 10 days, for any location in the United States and southern Canada.
The maps are made with our internal blend of high-resolution weather forecast data, including our proprietary snow-to-liquid ratio algorithm that is specifically made for complex, mountain terrain.
Getting Started
- Tap the "Maps" tab.
- Tap the overlay button.
- Tap "Forecast Snowfall".
- Scrub the bottom slider.
What are the main use cases for the forecast snowfall maps?
Get an easy-to-use visualization of the snow forecast for your favorite locations, check the timing of upcoming storms to catch the deepest turns or to avoid snowy road conditions, and see which ski resorts are favored for the deepest snow totals.
Are there any limitations to the forecast snowfall maps?
The forecast snowfall maps count "mixed precipitation" as "snow" so the maps could show more snow in areas that are getting sleet or freezing rain, along with where the rain/snow line is difficult to forecast. Double-check any location by tapping the map for the forecast details.
