Sunshine! A new day dawns for much-improved skiing/riding in Idaho

Summary

Super high winds on Wednesday forced Silver, Schweitzer and Pomerelle to close, but Thursday is a new day with mostly sunny skies, much cooler more winter-like temperatures and freshly groomed slopes to enjoy until we get more snow. Off-trail conditions are likely to be dicy after wet snow froze hard, and high winds caused wind slabs that could be dangerous and avalanchy.

Short Term Forecast

Skiing/riding conditions are looking favorable heading into the MLK weekend statewide after we bid farewell to the messy, windy atmospheric river event, which added to base levels anyway.

Following the sunny day on Thursday, there's a small disturbance coming through on Friday/Friday night that brings light snow with only maybe 1 inch of accumulation at Tamarack and Brundage and at Northern Idaho ski areas, and another system on Sunday that may bring a slightly higher chance of 1-3 inches.

Otherwise sunny skies are forecast on Saturday and partly cloudy skies on Monday, the Martin Luther King Holiday.

Pomerelle, Magic and Pebble Creek are all forecast to get a dusting Sunday and Sunday night, but skies should clear off for MLK day.

Bogus Basin, Soldier Mountain and Sun Valley look pretty much all clear through Wednesday of next week, with high pressure dominating overhead.

Extended Forecast

Perhaps a more significant storm system may emerge by next Wednesday, and at least for Northern Idaho, there's a chance of more Arctic air to move into the region, bringing colder temperatures and some light snow. We'll watch that trend as it develops next week.
