Summary

We talked about the potential for a healthy storm cycle during last week's update and it has come to fruition. Mammoth will be measuring totals in the FEET through Friday (1/29) as multiple days of heavy snow and cold temps deliver the goods.

The satellite imagery below shows the stream of moisture into California from the Pacific, with the bullseye directly over central California. What a beautiful sight!

Totals from Tuesday night through Friday will reach 4-6 FEET for Squaw Alpine and 7-9+ FEET for Mammoth. Yes, this is a classic Sierra storm and one of those weeks that you love to observe as a snow lover.

For skiing, the next couple of days will be tough as mountain operations have to dig out the lifts and complete avalanche mitigation. The call is to likely wait until Friday or Saturday to enjoy the goods.

Elsewhere in the Western US, destinations will receive the scraps from this Sierra cycle, though Jackson Hole could do surprisingly well in what I like to call the "Tahoe - Teton Connection". The following graphic comes from our Jackson Hole Daily Snow and Meteorologist Alan Smith.

You can see how the current setup of moist, southwest flow can deliver from Tahoe to the Tetons. For skiing, keep an eye on Thursday and Saturday for Jackson Hole and especially Saturday for Grand Targhee.

Further south, Alta/Snowbird in Utah will do well from Wednesday night through Saturday, with lighter amounts for Colorado at Arapahoe Basin and Aspen Snowmass.

Extended Forecast

Following a break on Saturday and Sunday, yet another Sierra hammer will slam into California for Monday, February 1st, and into Tuesday, February 2nd. Keep an eye on Tuesday and/or Wednesday, February 3rd to enjoy the goods in California.

Looking further ahead, we'll be watching for a change in the pattern as the storminess shifts east into the Intermountain West. This will be accompanied by much colder air and this could last into the middle of February. Keep an eye on the Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado destinations in early February.

As always, stay up-to-date with our team of local forecasters. They will provide you with excellent local analysis and really help you dial in the details with updates every morning.
