Warmer through late week

Summary

Temperatures will rise through the 50s for Wednesday through Friday with spring conditions across central and northern resorts. For the weekend, Saturday looks to ski/ride better than Sunday with some rain possibly moving in.

Update

Our North Atlantic ocean storm has pulled away from New England a bit earlier than expected and opened the door to less clouds and warmer temperatures here midweek. On Tuesday we saw temperatures peaking in the mid 50s at bases across central and Northern New England with slope-side temperatures pushing through the 40s under partly cloudy skies. The warm temperatures are leading to softer trails and continued melting/ripening/corning of the snow pack.

High pressure is working its way into New England on Wednesday with a good amount of sunshine and temperatures starting the day in the mid 30s. We are on our way to the mid 50s again today at bases with low 40s at elevation under a mix of sun and clouds expected across the mountains. A carbon copy follows for Thursday and again Friday with slightly warmer temperatures each day.

The storm track is a bit odd right now (due to some blocking, aka traffic jam, still in the North Atlantic). Storms are forming over the center of the country and moving up through the Great Lakes region into Canada -- staying to our west. This will continue into the weekend with some rain getting closer to the region with a warm front by Saturday/Sunday. Saturday is likely the winner of the weekend with cloudy skies likely and temperatures in the mid 60s, whereas Sunday looks a bit wet with temperatures "only" in the 50s.

Long range forecasts for late next week (~15-20 April) have the atmospheric flow over the U.S. develop a trough of cold air over the central and eastern US that should favor cooler temperatures, more clouds, and increasing odds of rain or showers for the Northeast. If it were January, I'd be hyping chances for a Nor'Easter and snow. We won't rule out a chance of a Nor'Easter, but it won't likely be snow...

With that said, odds of snow towards the end of next week are not zero, but remain much below 50/50. Note that in mid-to-late April, you're hoping for a really good storm ("lots of dynamics") that happens at night. And then, most of the snow will melt off the next day. Perhaps we'll get something good and locations at elevation will do alright.

Snow conditions are variable and definitely Spring like at resorts that remain open with a few exceptions. For example, Saddleback in Maine recently received ~5-6" of new snow and is skiing some powder. Get it before it compacts and melts! Same with Sugarloaf. Jay Peak has 62 trails open and will ski/ride daily through April 25th (according to their social media); Stowe skis limited terrain until 4/18. Still lots of ski-able terrain out there.

I'll be back on Friday with another update. Enjoy.
