Solid Storm Wrapping Up, Smaller Storm on Tap for the Weekend
Summary
Many resorts received 15 - 30+ cms over the last few days, continuing the positive trend for conditions in the Andes. Another round of snow is expected this weekend before a break in the action.
Short Term Forecast
First let’s check out some reports today, courtesy of the folks at PowderQuest Tours.
La Parva: 20 - 25 cms
Valle Nevado: 40 cms
Corralco: 20 cms
Portillo: 40 cms
It is nice to see resorts in the north be the winners from this storm, and conditions continue to improve.
Forecast for Thursday 7/13 - Saturday 7/15
After a quick break on Thursday, we have another storm on top for the weekend. This will again be a smaller storm impacting a smaller area, but will still bring more new snow, especially to resorts like Antillanca and Volcan Osorno in the south. Snow will pick up again on Thursday night and last through most of the day Friday in the central and southern regions. The storm will start out on the warm side but a cold front will cool things off on Friday, resulting in right side up snow. Light snow will continue through Saturday.
Between 15 - 30 cms are likely in these southern Chilean resorts, with mainly 5 - 10 cms elsewhere. Below is the snowfall forecast form the European model for this storm. You can see the region where the heaviest snow will fall, with lesser amounts north and south.
Forecast for Sunday 7/16 - Monday 7/17
We'll have another break between storms on Sunday and Monday, with a warming trend. Get out and enjoy the break, though there will still be a fair amount of clouds around.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Tuesday 7/18 - Saturday 7/22
The good news is that another storm is likely to begin Tuesday morning or afternoon. Right now, this looks like a large but warm storm favoring the higher elevation northern resorts. Models currently show temperatures well above normal for this event, with rain a real possibility at lower elevations and lower elevation resorts. Let's hope there is a strong cooling trend over the next five days before this storm arrives.
