More Action This Week, Conditions Improving Across the Andes

Summary

Significant snow last week has greatly improved conditions in South America. More resorts have opened and the skiing and riding has been good. More storms are on tap for this week with a break likely next week.

Short Term Forecast

It’s a bit of a challenge to get accurate totals from the South American resorts, and when I can find them, the elevation of where the report came from is typically not given. Still, several resorts likely saw several feet of snow last week.

Forecast for Monday 7/10 - Wednesday 7/12

After a mellow Monday our next storm arrives Tuesday afternoon. This storm will be taking a more brotherly track, with the biggest totals likely at the northern resorts. Snow will continue through Tuesday night and into Wednesday, with cold temperatures. Expect 20 - 40 cms for most resorts, with higher totals possible at Alto del Padre, Chapa Verde, and Portillo.

Forecast for Thursday 7/13 - Sunday 7/16

Most of Thursday will be dry before another storm arrives Thursday night. This will take a more southerly track, and is not as strong overall. On the upper end, resorts like Volcan Osorno, Antillanca, Corralco, Pucon, and Las Araucarias can expect 15 - 30 cms, with <15cms elsewhere. Below is the European forecast for the total snow from both storms.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Monday 7/17 - Friday 7/21

The week of Monday 7/17 looks dry at the moment, with the next chance for snow on the weekend. I will keep an eye on this period and have an update on Wednesday.
