Lots of powder to chase Thursday through Sunday

Summary

The forecast maps look beautiful with significant snow likely for the Northwest, the Northern Rockies, West Coast, and also the Central Rockies. You should be able to find powder around most of the west through the weekend.

Short Term Forecast

Powder Pic

Even though the calendar says it’s only mid-December, I consider this prime season for finding excellent powder. The low sun angle and new terrain openings usually get me (and hopefully you) very excited.

Forecast for Thu, Dec 12

On Thursday, the first in a series of storms will bring snow to the Northwest and the Northern Rockies. This is just the start of an active storm cycle.

Forecast for Fri, Dec 13 – Sat, Dec 14

Friday and Saturday should offer excellent powder from the coast all the way inland to Utah and Colorado. Since many areas will see snow for multiple days, conditions should be soft and in some cases quite deep.

Forecast for Sun, Dec 15 – Mon, Dec 16

On the tail end of the weekend, one storm will exit the Rockies with some snow lingering around Colorado and New Mexico. Then another storm should move into the Northwest early next week.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Tue, Dec 17 – Fri, Dec 20

The week before Christmas should be somewhat quiet for the Rockies. There will be snow and colder air over the Northeast and snowfall should ramp up in the later in the week for the west coast.

Outlook for Sat, Dec 21 – Wed, Dec 25

Heading into the Christmas holiday, I have low confidence about the Northeast. However, I do have high confidence that storminess will park itself along the west coast with maybe some storminess heading east into the Rockies.

Thanks so much for reading, and check back for my next post on Monday, December 16th.
