Deepest powder will be in the Northwest this week

Summary

Last week, California, Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado received 20-40+ inches of snow with back-to-back-to-back powder days. This week, the northwest will see 1-3+ feet of snow.

Short Term Forecast

Powder Pic

It has been a great week for California and the central Rockies, and after this storm cycle that dropped 3+ feet of snow, conditions feel like mid-winter.

Forecast for Mon, Dec 16 – Tue, Dec 17

We will start the week with a powder morning for southern Colorado on Monday while snow continues for central and northern British Columbia. In the east, light snow will fall over the Mid-Atlantic and parts of the Northeast.

Forecast for Wed, Dec 18 – Fri, Dec 20

While the Northeast will see light snow and cold temperatures, the bigger story will be the multiple feet of snow in the Northwest. The snowpack in the mountains of Oregon, Washington, and southwestern British Columbia is only 30-40% of average, so these areas need the flakes!

Forecast for Sat, Dec 21 – Sun, Dec 22

It’s likely that the deepest powder will continue to be in Washington and British Columbia, though areas farther to the south like Oregon and California could see snowfall as well.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Mon, Dec 23 – Fri, Dec 27

My thinking about the Christmas week forecast has not changed much. While the Northeast may see some colder air and light snow, the most action will be along the west coast. It’s possible that some snow will also push east into the Rockies, but this is less certain than the snowfall closer to the coast.

Thanks so much for reading, and check back for my next post on Thursday, December 19th.
