By Joel Gratz, Founding Meteorologist Posted 4 years ago January 16, 2020
Western pow Thu & Fri, eastern pow Sat & Sun
Summary
One more powerful storm will bring powder to the west through the end of the week. Then during the weekend, the weather pattern will change with colder temperatures and snow for the east.
Short Term Forecast
Storm Cycle
The first half of January 2020 brought consistently deep snow to many mountains around the western United States and Canada. Our snowfall history calendar for Jackson Hole, Wyoming shows that it snowed for 15 straight days with a total of 135 inches. Wow!
Forecast for Thu, Jan 16 – Fri, Jan 17
We will end this week and this cycle with one more storm that should bring snow to most western mountains. Thursday will be a powder day in California and Friday should bring moderate snow totals to Utah and Colorado.
Forecast for Sat, Jan 18 – Sun, Jan 19
Let’s change things up. While some snow will linger around northern Washington and coastal British Columbia, the bigger story will be the return of cold air and snow to the eastern part of North America with a storm moving through this region on Saturday and Sunday.
Forecast for Mon, Jan 20 – Fri, Jan 24
Looking ahead to the week that will begin with the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, there should be a few storms that will keep snowflakes in the air, but I cannot pinpoint one area or one day that will offer the deepest snow.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Sat, Jan 25 – Wed, Jan 29
Even though this is 10+ days away, I have decent confidence that the weather pattern will evolve like the following map shows, and this is because multiple models are showing a similar forecast. The coldest air should stay near and east of the Rockies while weak-to-moderate storms could hit the west coast.
Thanks so much for reading and please check back for my next post on Tuesday, January 21st.
