End of week powder, more snow next week

Summary

This is just what we want to see in the middle of winter – consistent storms and deep powder. The biggest snow totals this week will be in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and northern New England. Next week will stay active, though I have low confidence in which areas will see the most snow.

Short Term Forecast

Last Five Days

These are healthy five-day totals throughout the Northwest, the Northern Rockies, and the Central Rockies. Reports of 10-25 inches over a few days may not grab the headlines, but they certainly keep the snowpack in good shape and provide fun powder.

Forecast for Thu, Feb 6 – Fri, Feb 7

We will close out this week with two areas of powder.

First, the Northern and Central Rockies will see 48+ hours of snow from late Wednesday through Saturday morning as a plume of moisture stalls over this area. Snow totals could go above 2 feet and maybe even over 3 feet.

Second, a complex storm over the Northeast will bring rain, sleet, freezing rain, and snow. The mountains farthest to the north should stay mostly snow, most of the time, and amounts could be in the double digits (inches) by late Friday into early Saturday.

Forecast for Sat, Feb 8 – Sun, Feb 9

A new storm will enter the Northwest while another storm sags south and stalls over Southern California. This should result in light-to-moderate snow amounts across the west, but forecasts show a wide range of possibilities so my confidence in the details is low.

Forecast for Mon, Feb 10 – Tue, Feb 11

It looks like we’ll start next week with three areas of snow. The Northwest could continue to be in the zone, another storm should bring snow to the Southwest, and light snow with mixed precipitation could return to the Northeast.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Wed, Feb 12 – Sun, Feb 16

It looks like more of the same as we head into the middle of February. The Northeast will be on the edge with additional chances for storms while dealing with the ever-present line between rain//mix/snow. The Southwest could see additional storms, and parts of the Northwest and the Northern and Central Rockies could also be in the mix.

Thanks so much for reading and please check back for my next post on Monday, February 10th.

Most of the feedback about the new design has been positive, and we will be releasing a few more updates soon to address lingering bugs and feature improvements like adding sorting and a map view to the Favorites screen.
