The Rockies & Northwest will be deep this week

Summary

The powder party in the Northwest and Rockies during January will continue into February. One storm will hit the Rockies on Monday and Tuesday, and then a series of storms will bring more snow from Wednesday through Friday.

Short Term Forecast

Fluff

Do you like a soft base, cool temperatures, snow falling at 1-2 inches per hour, and fluff hitting you in the chest and face while you ski or ride? I hope so because that’s the recipe for grins stretching from ear-to-ear. Those were exactly the conditions in northern Colorado this past Thursday (January 30, 2020) at Steamboat Powdercats, a cat-skiing operation just north of the Steamboat ski area (and the conditions at the ski area were pretty darn good as well).

Forecast for Mon, Feb 3 – Tue, Feb 4

We’ll start the week with one main system diving south from the Northern Rockies (Montana, Wyoming, Idaho) into the Central Rockies (Utah, Colorado). Both Monday and Tuesday should offer powder for many of these areas. Also on Tuesday, another storm should bring snow to Coastal and Northern British Columbia.

Forecast for Wed, Feb 5 – Fri, Feb 7

If one day of snow is wonderful, then three days of snow is three times as wonderful. From Wednesday to Friday, a nearly continuous stream of moisture and energy will flow over the Northwest, Northern Rockies, and Central Rockies bringing 48-72 hours of snowfall and multiple powder days. The only downside is that temperatures may warm during these days causing thicker snow to fall on top of lighter, fluffier snow. In the east, one or two storms should bring precipitation later in the week, though it’s too early to know where the rain/snow line will set up.

Forecast for Sat, Feb 8 – Sun, Feb 9

This weekend, there will be chances for storms in both the western and eastern United States, but details are still murky. Stay tuned.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Mon, Feb 10 – Fri, Feb 14

It looks like we’ll head into the second week of February with a stormy pattern favoring the western part of North America. The highest odds for snow could be over the Northwest, Northern Rockies, Central Rockies, and a storm might sneak into the Southern Rockies as well.

Thanks so much for reading and please check back for my next post on Thursday, February 6th.
