Summary

The northeast will experience an extended period of cool and snowy weather through mid-February, while near continuous storms impact the northwest and northern Rockies.

Short Term Forecast

Through the weekend, snowfall will favor the northwest and northern Rockies, while the northeast will continue to experience snow showers and hefty snow totals for areas near Lake Ontario.

Looking ahead to next week, February 6-10, the temperature outlook shows that the coolest air will stay over the northern tier of the US, favoring the northwest and northeast.

The snowfall forecast for next week, February 6-10, does show plenty of snow over the northern tier, but there could also be significant snow a bit further south, into California, Utah, and Colorado.

Since California, Utah, and Colorado will not experience cold temperatures, the snow could be a bit thicker and denser in these areas.

Also, in the northeast, a mid-week storm (sometime around February 8) could track in such a way to bring a brief period of warmer weather, which means some of the precipitation may fall as a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain.

Extended Forecast

As we look further ahead, into mid-February, most longer-range models are forecasting a warm-up for the entire United States. The map below shows that most locations could experience above-average temperatures.

Even longer-range forecasts that extend to late February show that cooler air may return, especially in the west. Let’s hope that occurs and we can rid ourselves of this mid-month warm up!

Stay tuned and thanks for reading!
