Some Light Snow

Summary

A few light snow showers possible today thru Friday. Accumulations will be minor. In general, we have a break in the action with no significant storms likely until mid-month.

Short Term Forecast

Light snow showers are affecting parts of Utah today. Seems like the heaviest snow is along the Wasatch Back and in northern Wasatch right now.  Accumulations should be light, but it could add a it of fluff to your ski day if you are on the mountain today.

This snow is associated with a system that has been dropping down the California coast over the past 24-hours.  This low pressure system is going to eventually track inland across the desert southwest. Over the next 36 hours, we will see some moisture spin up from the storm -- primarily impacting southern Utah.  A few inches of snow are possible by Friday morning down at Brian Head.  Otherwise, I think just a chance for light snow up north on Thursday night.

For the weekend, we clear out again with warming temperatures as high pressure seizes control.  This will be a somewhat stubborn pattern, so expect a solid week or more without snow.

Extended Forecast

I'm still watching the extended forecast for signs of change.  The GFS model is far more optimistic and brings a weak system in on the 12th of December, followed by stronger storms thereafter.  The Euro has these storms pretty much falling apart and keeps us almost entirely dry thru the 15th of the month.  Right now it's just a game of watching and waiting.  Eventually, the pattern will shift back to a more active one, it's just a matter of when.  Until that time, ski resorts continue to get more terrain open and we are sitting pretty with an above normal snowpack to act as a buffer to get us thru this dry spell.
