Inversions Strengthening

Summary

We clear out for the weekend with high pressure taking control and warmer temperatures aloft. Inversions in the valley will continue to strengthen. Weak systems possible next week.

Short Term Forecast

The closed low system is passing well to our south.  Some moisture has spun up into Utah, but it has been very limited.  Brian Head is reporting 3" of new snow this morning but that's about the best we've seen.  Otherwise, just clouds farther north.

High pressure is taking control and we will clear out today thru the weekend.  More and more terrain has been opening.  Cold temperatures and low sun angle have kept the snow quality high so that when new terrain opens, it's like a powder day all over again.  This weekend the temps will warm aloft but inversions will strengthen in the valleys.  We may no longer have tons of powder to ski, but it's the perfect weekend to ski groomers with the family and just get up into the clear air of the mountains.

Our next chance for snow will come next week, but it does not appear to be strong.  On Tuesday, both the GFS and Euro have a very weak system passing thru the region.  Maybe a few snow showers but accumulation should be minor.  May not even be strong enough to blow out the inversions.

Then, a secondary system is timing for late Wednesday into Thursday.  This system may be a bit stronger but it still looks somewhat weak.  Right now, GFS and Euro ensembles have it putting down generally less than 0.5" of liquid.  So probably not much more than a 3-6" storm at best.

Overall, the GFS is by far the more optimistic model over the next week, but even it doesn't show too much:

So perhaps no major storms in the next 10 days, but a couple chances for minor systems to freshen things up.

Extended Forecast

Over the past few days, it seems the extended forecast is looking better.  After about December 17, the pattern looks like it will really open up for storms to move into the western US off the Pacific.  Massive high pressure will be building up over the Hudson Bay in Canada, which is often a good pattern for us.

The below image is from the week leading up to Christmas.  The low height anomalies (blue colors) indicates the storm track will be overhead:

We have a good snowpack right now and terrain is open.  We have a bit of a dry spell, but I think the second half of December will feature a return to active weather.  For now, just need to have a bit of patience.
