Southern Utah, then Northern Utah

Summary

Two storms will impact Utah over the next week. The first will favor southern Utah, while the second will favor northern and central Utah.

Short Term Forecast

We had a weak wave of energy move thru yesterday afternoon and evening. This brought a few light snow showers to areas north of SLC up toward Logan. Don't think there was much accumulation, in fact, the only resort reporting any new snowfall is Snowbasin with 1". However, we are left with some low-hanging clouds this morning which are creating some interesting lighting as the sunrises. Here are a few images from across the state:

We will generally clear out today, but clouds will once again start streaming into the area later tonight as another system moves into the region. This storm will focus on southwestern Utah. There is a chance for a few snow showers in the Wasatch, but the bulk of accumulation should stay down near Brian Head were several inches of snowfall is likely by late Thursday. Here is a look at the GFS output for snowfall:

Again, a few inches down south, and minor accumulations elsewhere. We clear out late Thursday, with ridging in control into Saturday.

Then, we'll have another system approaching on Sunday, with snow showers lasting into Monday.  This system will impact north and central Utah. The GFS has the following depiction:

In the GFS, it actually looks like some healthy totals will be possible. I don't want to completely discount this model, but it should be noted that the Euro and many of the GFS's own ensembles are not nearly as aggressive.  At this point, I think we are looking at a moderate storm at best.

Extended Forecast

Ridging should take control early next week and perhaps last for some time.  The GFS wants to keep the ridge placement right along the coast which would close the storm door. The Euro shifts the ridge west into the Pacific far enough for troughs to dig into the Great Basin, which should allow us some storms around or just after mid-month. Still waiting for more consensus on the models.
