Snow showers today, Stronger storm Sunday

Summary

Light snow showers today in the mountains of Northern Utah. Generally dry weather thereafter until a potentially strong storm arrives on Sunday.

Short Term Forecast

This morning we have a weak system pushing thru Northern Utah. Snow showers are falling around the Wasatch per webcams this AM. This "system" has been trending better, but that doesn't mean much when you are essentially trending from nothing to maybe an inch or two. Still, if you are going skiing today, you could perhaps hope for a surprise layer of soft snow. This is particularly true in areas favored in NW flow such as LCC where a couple inches is certainly not out of the question.

Otherwise, we clear out again tonight and should remain mostly dry thru Saturday. The weak storm we discussed yesterday for Friday has all but disappeared from the models. We could get some clouds and breezes but snowfall now looks unlikely.

On Sunday, things change as a decently strong system makes its way into Utah by early Sunday morning. This storm has a good moisture fetch and a persistent NW flow. In someways it is similar to the storm we had last week, but thankfully this one should be much cooler -- so snow densities won't be nearly as high. Current GFS snowfall output:

And for the sake of full discovery, here is the Canadian GEM as well:

As you can see, both models have a very healthy snowfall for the Wasatch Range. The Euro, it should be said, is perhaps even more robust with amounts. This is good news. Confidence is increasing in a good storm for Utah. Sunday should be a storm day with a culmination day on Monday and leftovers on Tuesday.

It looks like we clear out Tuesday into the middle of next week...

Extended Forecast

Late next week, high pressure off the west coast will move inland and do battle with a trough that drops south out of BC. It looks like the high pressure is going to have the edge in this fight and should keep the active weather mostly to our north. We may be looking at an extended break in the action during the second half of February.
