Week Of Weaks

Summary

A weak system will bring light snow to northern Utah mountains Sunday. Another weak storm is possible for midweek with the potential for additional storms heading into next weekend. Temperatures will remain quite cool in this pattern.

Short Term Forecast

Clouds will increase today ahead of a storm that will arrive on Sunday. This system is moisture-starved, but quite cold. Snow will fall on Sunday in Northern Utah mountains, but it will generally be light. QPF amounts are fairly meager with just 0.15-0.4" expected. Even at high snow-to-liquid ratios, that would only be 2-6" or so. This light refresh is shown well in the U of U GFS graphs:

A few inches mostly falling during the day on Sunday. We should then have a break Monday with a chance for another weak storm arriving late Tuesday into Wednesday. Again, this should only be a light refresh at best with a reinforcing shot of cold air.

Overall, this week is going to be cold with a couple periods of light snow.

Extended Forecast

Models have been trending wetter heading into next weekend. The Euro and Canadian in particular show a trough capable of bringing some halfway decent snowfall totals to the region next weekend. The GFS isn't really on board yet, but I'm keep an eye on this. Beyond that, all models continue to show a more active pattern developing for the first week of February. Details should start to become clearer as we get within 10 days.
