UPDATE FROM THE CHASE! GET READY- DEEP POW

Summary

The chase is on! Grand Targhee was great on Monday with 10-12 inches of upper mountain powder. Brief update on Monday night to address the next storms.

Update

Brief Monday night update: It is getting deep and deeper.

Below: Today at Grand Targhee - Photo: @powderchasersteve via Instagram- 8-12 inches overnight at upper elevations. Light density. View from the new Colter Chair area.

Snow is falling in the Wasatch range under NW flow (Orographic showers) that will continue overnight into Tuesday morning. Expect 5-10 inches of additional snow (4-5 fell on Monday) for the Cottonwoods, and 3-6 for the Park City, Wasatch Back, and areas further north. Powder Mountain sometimes sneaks up surprises with NW flow. The Tetons nabbed a solid foot by the opening bell on Monday with light-density pow. Targhee rode great, especially with a delayed opening of the new Colter Lift (Caught 2 openings today). Teton Pass and JHMR scored higher amounts under SW flow. The town was also deep with Snow King scoring in Jackson.

Colorado is grabbing freshies Monday night with models focussing energy in Rocky Mountain National Park, the I-70 corridor, and south to Telluride (NW flow is good for them). Expect 6-12 inches in many areas by Tuesday morning. Winners might include CB, RMNP, Vail, Steamboat, Copper, and Snowmass. Most resorts will report new snow on Tuesday morning.

Below: Total snowfall for Colorado through Tuesday morning favoring areas along the I-70 corridor, especially north to Steamboat, RMNP, south to Snowmass/Aspen, and CB. Telluride is in the bottom left section of pink and could do well when winds shift to the NW. Eldora and WP are wildcards. Expect 8-12 inches in many areas for Tuesday with some spots exceeding 15 inches.

For chases this week look for some decent totals in the Wasatch range for Tuesday morning especially LCC and BCC (LCC might lead the pack). The Canyons side of PCMR will also do well. Deer Valley opens on Tuesday!

The models look amazing for BC, and the PNW for Tuesday PM to Wednesday PM.  SW turns S, SE late Tuesday night favoring Crystal Mountain (They get shadowed by Rainier in SW, West, and sometimes NW). The entire Cascade range from the BC border through to most of Oregon will score big numbers by Wednesday (1-2 feet or more). Temps are cold with high quality and lowland snow likely in the Seattle Foothills.  Chase for Wednesday for deep turns from Baker all the way south through Oregon. Interior resorts may also do well under S or SE flow, especially in the southern part of Washington. Crystal will score with the less usual S or SE wind direction.

From the PNW, the Sierra storm has held up for Thursday/Friday (Storm ski Thursday late AM) for 2 feet or more along the entire Sierra Crest. Friday morning will be deep You can chase there after riding deep PNW pow on Wednesday or Thursday.  We might stick to the PNW for new openings. Idaho looks very deep, especially in the central mountains, extending to the north to Sandpoint and south to Ketchum. Sun Valley could get nailed as well as Brundage, Tamarack, and the Panhandle.

Below: Late this week beginning on Thursday the PNW storm heads south and east bringing widespread snowfall back to the Rockies and Sierra. Idaho, from Sun Valley, Stanley, and north to McCall might score very big totals. Northern Regions and the panhandle, including WhiteFish MT, and MT Snowbowl (Missoula) could do very well. The Tetons also fire again late this week extending north to Big Sky. These totals are based on high snow rations and very cold temps. Chase from Idaho Thursday to the Tetons or Wasatch on Friday?

Looking out further afield, the deepness in Idaho stretches over the Tetons and southern Montana for late this week. The Wasatch will also score some decent totals late this week, however, the Tetons or some spots in Idaho might outscore them. Colorado grabs the leftovers late Friday to Saturday with a wide area of resorts picking up some decent totals. This storm may perform well for the southern regions of Colorado under a moist S or SW flow. Those areas are in need of a big dump. Let's hope it happens.

Below: Fantasy map of total snowfall ending Friday morning for the west. This is based on high snow ratios of 15:1 or higher The PNW, Sierra, Idaho, Montana, Wasatch, and a decent area of Colorado all score. The southern mountains of Colorado grab decent totals late week under SW flow.  Chases will be numerous and you can take your pick from many areas including Canada (BC).
