Warm and Wet Pattern Ahead

Summary

After a snowy period with some of the best conditions of the season, we now enter a less favorable pattern. A series of warm and wet storms will impact the region over the next week, affecting the central and southern resorts mainly. This pattern may continue next week as well, but there's plenty of time for that to change.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Wednesday 7/26 - Thursday 7/27

The first in the series of warm storms arrives on Wednesday night. This storm will impact the central and southern resorts mainly. This is a smaller storm, and there may be just enough cold air in place to keep this all snow. This should only amount to < 10 cms though, winding up on Thursday.

Forecast for Friday 7/28 - Sunday 7/30

Storm #2 should start early Friday morning for the southern resorts. Accompanied by a warm front, precipitation will likely fall as rain, or at best a quick transition from snow to rain. This storm is taking a southerly track once again, so there won’t be too many impacts for the northern resorts.

Rain will likely continue through the day on Friday, although a slowly approaching cold front may turn things to a mix Friday afternoon, especially in the south. The cold front never really makes it that far north though, so this will be mainly a rain event except for resorts like El Fraile, La Hoya, and Cerro Catedral. Accumulations here will be limited though, except farther south at El Fraile where 6 - 12 cms are possible on Sunday.

This system has a fair amount of moisture, so the rainfall amounts will be a concern. Check out the total precipitation forecast form the European model below.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Monday 7/31 - Friday 8/4

Another warm storm is expected to arrive on Monday, once again with a southerly track. Right now this looks like a mostly rain event, but hopefully that will change in the coming days.
