Multiple powder days coming up!

Summary

As cold air hangs over and eventually retreats from the northeast, a series of storms will bring powder to the western United States and Canada during the weekend and through the first half of next week.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Thursday & Friday

From a snowfall perspective, the week will end on a quiet note for many areas as cold (yet drier) air sits over the Upper Midwest and Northeast and snow just gets started over the northwest.

Forecast for the weekend

The snow forecast over the weekend paints a much more exciting story, with intense snow across the entire west from western Canada through the west coast and into the Rockies. There will be powder on Saturday and Sunday for many areas!

Extended Forecast

Forecast for next week

The powder party over the western US and Canada should continue through at least the middle of next week. While large single storms are great fun to talk about, the best powder conditions often occur during storm cycles, such as this one, which deliver consistent snow over many days.

The outlook for February 9-13

It’s a stretch to think that weather forecasts are accurate out to 14 days into the future, and while I do not trust the details of these longer-range forecasts, when the average of multiple models shows a strong signal with cold air and likely snowfall over the west, it bears watching. Perhaps the western powder party will continue through the middle of February?!

Thanks for reading and look for the next forecast on Monday, February 4.
