Utah scores deep totals, California up next

Summary

What a week for the West! The Northwest and Northern Rockies scored the goods earlier this week, and the storm has progressed southward over time with Utah receiving deep mid-week totals while Tahoe has already seen its first round. The next storm will bring very heavy snow to Tahoe & SoCal with unseasonably cold air & low snow levels. A storm will also take aim at New England early next week.

Short Term Forecast

Utah receives deep mid-week snow totals:

A strong storm produced impressive snow totals throughout Northern Utah, ranging from 17-43 inches in 48 hours as of Thursday morning according to the Utah Daily Snow. The storm also produced over two feet of snow in the Salt Lake Valley and Wasatch Front.

Forecast for Fri, Feb 24 – Sat, Feb 25:

Get ready for an incredible storm cycle across California as a low pressure system sets up off the Coast while unseasonably cold air filters in from the north. The result will be deep snow totals across the Sierra Nevada Range with power snow quality more reminiscent of the Rockies.

The mountains of Southern California and other coastal ranges will also see deep (possibly record-setting?) snow totals and snow levels will also be very low for this region.

Check out the Tahoe Daily Snow and the Southern California Daily Snow for more details.

Elsewhere, a storm will also bring heavy snow to Southeast Alaska and Northern BC, while back-to-back storms will bring light to moderate snow to the Upper Midwest, New York, and New England.

Forecast for Sun, Feb 26 – Mon, Feb 27:

The California storm will exit and swing eastward on Sunday with snow for the Southwest & Southern Rockies. Meanwhile, two more storms will make landfall on the West Coast during this period with fresh snow expected for nearly the entire West.

A storm involving a warm air surge from the south will impact the Upper Midwest on Monday with a mix of rain, snow, and ice expected, while the leading edge of this storm should reach New York by Monday afternoon with mixed precipitation, while areas further south in the Appalachians will primarily see rain.

Forecast for Tue, Feb 28 – Wed, Mar 1:

Storms will continue to impact the West during this period with the Sierra Nevada Range expected to score the deepest totals, while parts of the PNW and Rockies should see some nice totals as well. Heavy snow is also expected further north in Northwest BC and Alaska.

A strong storm will also move into the Northeast during this period, coinciding with the arrival of colder air to result in the potential for moderate to heavy snow across parts of New York and New England as well as Quebec.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Tue, Mar 2 – Sat, Mar 6:

An active pattern will continue throughout the West during this period with the latest medium-range trends hinting at a northwest-to-southeast storm track being favored. Temperatures will also remain well below average across the West. The Midwest and New England could potentially see another storm early in this period, while warmer temperatures are likely later in the period.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Monday (Feb 27).
