Holiday Snow for the West

Summary

An active pattern is setting up across the West for the holiday season with heavy snow for the Northwest in particular. Utah & Colorado will see frequent shots of light to moderate snow, while California and Oregon resorts will see both rain and snow with warmer air creeping in. The East will see a quiet pattern with a gradual warming trend, then colder air will arrive after the New Year.

5-Day Snow Forecast:

Santa will bring the goods to the Northwest this year with feet of snow expected for ski resorts in the Northwest and Northern Rockies over the next 5 days.

Consistent shots of light to moderate snow will keep the slopes fresh in the Central Rockies, while warmer temperatures will lead to higher snow levels and rain in California and Oregon (and occasionally other areas) this weekend.

Forecast for Wed (Dec 25) to Thu (Dec 26):

Light to moderate snow will fall across the Central Rockies on Wednesday, then a strong storm will bring heavy snow to the Northwest from later Wednesday into Thursday, with moderate snow further south in Tahoe.

Forecast for Fri (Dec 27) to Sat (Dec 28):

Multiple storms will bring heavy snow to the Northwest and Northern Rockies with deep snow totals expected. Warm air will push northward into California and Oregon, resulting in rising snow levels and a changeover to rain at some ski resorts. Utah and Colorado will pick up light snow on the southern fringe of the storm track.

Forecast for Sun (Dec 29) to Mon (Dec 30):

Heavy snow will continue for the Northwest and Northern Rockies with light to moderate snow for Utah and Colorado. Snow levels will remain high in Oregon and California initially, but will eventually drop as a cold front arrives with rain changing to snow in some areas.

A storm will also move into the East with rain for the Mid-Atlantic, while New England could see mixed precipitation. 

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Tue (Dec 31) to Sat (Jan 4):

The pattern will quiet down somewhat across the West, but storms are still expected to push into the Northwest and Northern Rockies on a semi-frequent basis.

Colder air will eventually push into the East and the pattern looks active overall with snow potential for the Mid-Atlantic and New England.
