Mostly Quiet & Warm This Week, Active Weather Next Week

Summary

Ski areas in the Pacific Northwest, Tahoe, and throughout the Rockies picked up moderate snow totals over the weekend and into Monday morning. Colorado and New Mexico will be the focus through Tuesday ahead of quiet conditions during the second half of the week, with the exception being unsettled weather for the Northeast. An active pattern will redevelop over the Western US and Canada next week.

Short Term Forecast

Western Snow Stoke

The Western US has been in the flow over the past couple of weeks and it was great to see some of the Tahoe ski resorts also joining the party over this past weekend.

Kirkwood picked up 9 inches, Boreal reported 8 inches, while both Palisades Tahoe and Sugar Bowl squeezed out 5 inches for Sunday morning's reports.

Elsewhere, Grand Targhee in Wyoming and Brian Head in southern Utah are reporting 10 inches on Monday morning, followed by Big Sky, Jackson Hole, Alta/Snowbird, and Arizona Snowbowl with 7 inches.

Forecast for Mon 3/21 – Tue 3/22:

The storm that brought fresh snow to Montana, Wyoming, and Utah on Sunday is now beginning to impact Colorado as I type on Monday morning. This storm had great potential when we were watching it develop last week but unfortunately, the storm trended down significantly over the weekend. Expect light to moderate snow totals through Tuesday evening for Colorado and New Mexico.

Forecast for Wed 3/23 – Thur 3/24:

With the exception of southeast Alaska, most of the United States and Canada will receive very mild and dry weather. The Upper Midwest and New England could receive mixed precipitation thanks to "unsettled" weather but that's about it.

Full-on spring skiing conditions will be found throughout the Western US as mid-mountain temps climb into the 50s for California, along with temps rising well above freezing up and down the Intermountain West.

Forecast for Fri 3/25 – Sat 3/26:

The end of the week will feature snow beginning to creep back into coastal British Columbia, along with mixed precipitation for the Northeast. Very mild weather will dominate much of the Western US, with the warmest temperatures of the season likely being recorded on Saturday throughout the Intermountain West.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Sun 3/27 – Thur 3/31:

Following very mild weather during the second half of the week, our attention will turn to an active storm track that will redevelop across British Columbia and down into the West Coast through Sunday, March 27.

A weak storm should then flow through the Rockies around Monday, March 28, followed by an even better-looking setup around Thursday, March 31. If you've been waiting for another opportunity to chase fresh snow, keep an eye on March 28 through April 2.

It may finally start to feel a lot like spring but winter isn't over yet. I've had some of my deepest powder days during the month of April in Colorado so don't put away your ski and snowboard gear just yet...

Thanks for reading! Next update on Wednesday (3/23).
